Diploma Teaching Exam Notes

These notes relate to teaching diplomas only. Performance diplomas tend to be more straightforward and easily understood.

  • Music - there is one ATCL teaching diploma offered, two LTCL teaching diplomas, and one FTCL diploma.

  • Drama - there is one ATCL teaching diploma and one LTCL teaching diploma offered.

Music Teaching Diplomas

There is one ATCL teaching diploma offered, two LTCL teaching diplomas, and one FTCL diploma.

ATCL Principles of Instrumental/Vocal Teaching

  • Meant for teachers focusing on small group and/or individual teaching – rather than large class teaching. Equivalent to first year of a university degree.

Exam structure/deliverables

  1. Unit 1 – teaching experience – 4,000 words submitted material. (Analysis, observation, case studies, design two original teaching resources)

  2. Unit 2 – 40min one-on-one exam with examiner comprising of presentation (10mins), initiative test (10mins) and viva voce (20mins).

Suggested South Africa Entry Process

  1. Candidate enters both units simultaneously, paying the full fee upon entry.

  2. Trinity SA team will schedule/timetable the exam.

  3. 4-6weeks prior to the face-to-face exam the candidate should submit their U1 written work, which the representative will send to the examiner as early as possible prior to the exam taking place.

  4. The examiner will pre-read the U1 submission and use it as part of the f2f exam.

LTCL Instrumental/Vocal teaching

  • Meant for teachers focusing on small group and/or individual teaching – rather than large class teaching. Equivalent to undergraduate degree.

Exam structure/deliverables

  1. Unit 1 – teaching experience – 8,000 words submitted material. (statement of teaching philosophy, case studies of teaching experience, peer observation, original teaching resource design – design 3 resources)

  2. Unit 2 – 60min one-on-one exam with examiner comprising of demonstration lesson (30mins), initiative test (10mins), viva voce (20mins)

Exam structure/deliverables

  1. Unit 1 – teaching experience – 8,000 words submitted material. (statement of personal teaching philosophy, case studies of teaching experience, peer observation, original teaching resource design – design 1 resource)

  2. Unit 2 – 60min one-on-one exam with examiner comprising of demonstration lesson (30mins), initiative test (10mins), viva voce (20mins). NOTE: The Music Teaching Diplomas usually take place at the school in which the candidate is working. This can be a pain to timetable so be aware of this aspect.

  • Dissertation based diploma equivalent to full time postgraduate degree.

 Exam structure/deliverables

  1. Unit 1 – 12,000 word dissertation

  2. Unit 2 – 50min presentation and viva voce

 

Drama Teaching Diplomas

ATCL Teaching (Speech and Drama, Theatre Arts, Communication Skills)

  • This qualification is evidence that the candidate can plan and deliver a taught programme for a specific learner or group of learners in a given setting and reflect upon its effectiveness. The qualification is of particular value to those working with individuals and small groups in studios, young people’s theatre and colleges.

Exam structure/deliverables

  1. Unit 1 — Principles of Teaching (written paper) – 2hr theory paper written along with music theory candidates.

  2. Unit 2 — Teaching Experience (submitted materials) – submit 3,000 words with two case studies, the candidate is also required to submit two examples of original teaching materials developed for and used with the student(s) in the case studies.

  3. Unit 3 — Practical Applications (demonstration and viva voce) – with examiner – consisting of demonstration (24-30mins) and viva voce (15mins).

 Suggested South Africa Entry Process

  1. Candidates can enter units in any order.

  2. Candidate will enter one unit at a time, paying for the units individually when entered.

  3. Trinity SA team will schedule/timetable the unit 1 along with the standard theory sessions, unit 2 will be sent on in digital format directly to the London marking team whenever completed, and unit 3 will be timetabled as part of the drama f2f sessions.

LTCL Teaching (Speech and Drama, Musical Theatre, Performance Arts, Applied Drama, Communication Skills)

  • This qualification is evidence that the candidate can plan and deliver taught programmes appropriate for a range of learners, learner groups and settings and can evaluate their effectiveness. It is suitable for those who will take responsibility for planning and teaching speech and drama, musical theatre, performance arts, applied drama or communication skills in schools, colleges, private studios and theatre education departments.

 Exam structure/deliverables

  1. Unit 1 — Principles of Teaching (written paper) – 2.5hr theory paper written along with music theory candidates.

  2. Unit 2 — Teaching Experience (submitted materials) – submit 5,000 words with three case studies, the candidate is also required to devise a comprehensive scheme of work relevant to Grades 4–5 in Speech and Drama, Musical Theatre, Performance Arts or Communication Skills. The length of the scheme of work and the teaching resources must be 1,500. When received this is sent in digital format directly to the London team.

  3. Unit 3 — Practical Applications (demonstration and viva voce) – with examiner – consisting of demonstration (32-40mins) and viva voce (20mins). The candidate will teach a lesson of 40 minutes’ duration with a class of 10 or more students. The lesson must be supported by a lesson plan, with clear statements of desired learning outcomes, and must demonstrate all the values embedded in this qualification. NOTE: The Drama Teaching Diplomas usually take place at the school in which the candidate is working. This can be a pain to timetable so be aware of this aspect.
